Movie name? Alien monster escapes its cell in a spaceship and kills everyone except one woman?

Seen the movie around 14 years ago. Here is plot as I remember it. There is an alien monster being held on a spaceship. Something goes wrong and the containment fails. It escapes and starts killing everyone. One woman survives and escapes to earth but alien follows her. She tries to find help to fight it. Every time she sees the monster, she forgets details how to stop it. Monster is never shown in actual form, but it jumps from body to body as it searches for her.

Its a shame this piece of Eighties goodness went virtually unnoticed. You had a very sexy alien, a hard-jawed and jaded cop, and a shapeshifting alien all brought together to do battle in Los Angeles. Sure, other movies have had similar plotlines but what set “Something Is Out There” apart from the overall premise was that the characters had weight to match their looks and agenda. It’s not enough that the jaded cop is uninterested in all the grisly murders going on in LA; it turns out that they are caused by one alien trying to assimilate into a lifeform suitable for Earth. But, he doesn’t believe in aliens~until he meets Ta’Ra, who is the sole survivor of her crew, duty bound to stop the alien unwittingly released on Earth. Before that happened, she was a simple med tech on board a prison ship, interested in doing her job well and having the occasional romantic interlude with the male crew member she loves. Suddenly, their lives intertwine into a life or death battle with the unstoppable.
NOTE: This was so popular that it inspired a TV series, unfortunately short-lived. Also, the alien does go from body to body, much like the alien in “The Hidden”.
