Helping Your Child Succeed versus Irrational Fears and Anxiety

To make sense of what phobias are, you must first understand that it could have come from rightly healthy fears which were put to the extreme. Healthy terrors caution you of things that you should and should not be doing, and prevent you from attempting things that you know will be bad for you. According to theories on humanistic therapy, people should understand that fear per se is not bad, as long as it is manageable and as long as the effect it has on a person does not prevent that person from functioning like a normal individual. If you observe that your child has developed some kind of fear first consider what sort of fear this is and what abrupt consequence this has on your child. A common kind of fear developed among toddlers is the fear and anxiety produced by separation with parents, hence the temper tantrums when being left at school with other children. Age-appropriate fears denotes those subject of fears that children encounter at particular age groups such as the fear of ostracism by teens and the fear of abandonment by younger children; preferably, children should be able to resolve these fears by themselves and move past them as time goes by rather than have these irrational fears deepen as they are left disregarded and not thought about to.

Children normally grow out of their fears because they find ways to manage these fears themselves, and are oftentimes more able to make sense of these fears in their own pace. The whole point is not forcing your child to face the fear head on but not dispiriting a battle with the fear either; it’s all a matter of facing your child’s fear on his or her own terms.

A very valuable way of helping children verbalize and tackle their phobias is through play therapy. In play therapy, children are allowed to play with a room full of toys or art items, and children often play out their fears through this; for example, children with arachnophobia can picture or illustrate big spiders while playing. Children will also be able to approach their fear in their own terms and, without somebody forcing them brutally into it, they can face their fears and make sense out of it.

Parents would do well not to trivialize their children’s phobias because even though it appears or immature, in the mind of a child, the object of the fear is very valid and rational. If a child is afraid of the dark, yelling at him and ordering him to bed in a dark room will just worsen the situation and collect more negative feelings on the experience of sleeping in a dark room instead of explaining the child that there is nothing to be afraid of in the dark. Parents may do some things out of lack of knowledge like ignoring or belittling their child’s fears or upholding the fears by making accommodations for them.

Acquiring the easy way out will not help your child face his or her fears but would somewhat worsen the situation further. It may take time, but with your assistance and support, your child can ultimately be unconstrained of a crippling kind of unhealthy fear.
