How do I start a dog boarding business?

I am 12, and I want to start a dog boarding business. Its not just going to be my business, but the family’s since my Dad got fired, and my Mom gets paid very little. What I want to know is, how much should I charge, how to get my business started, and what would i need?? Thanks!

And what makes you think “the family” would be successful in opening and running such a business? The economy SUCKS right now – it’s hard enough to get a job at an established company, darn near impossible (in some places) to start your own.

Does anyone in the family have any experience working in a boarding kennel? Any experience running a business of any kind? Has everyone taken business classes as well as pet first aid classes? What professional can vouch for the families knowledge of dog behavior, training, handling, and care?

Before you even start THINKING about rates and fees, you need to find a place that you can convert to a safe and reliable kennel. It won’t be easy. Needs to be a commercial zoned property and it needs to be located in an area where you CAN kennel dogs – you’re looking at a hundred grand easily right there just for a property, not including any construction.

Then you have to have the kennels built properly, utilities installed and set up, and the property inspected. Then you have to incorporate or claim your business name and register with the county. You’ll need a butt load of insurance. You’ll need a lawyer to help write up legal documents and contracts.

Does mom/dad agree to this little venture? Something tells me “no”.
