what exactly did david bowie do in fashion to make him an icon?

I have no idea who he is. I’ve looked on google for images of him fashion-wise, but i just don’t get it. so many famous people (ex: lady gaga and adam lambert) have said they look up to david bowie as a major fashion icon and inspiration. I don’t understand what he did to contribute to the world of fashion.

I think he just didn’t follow any fashion, and of course first dude to wear make-up, i think ☺
