Why does my old knife rust after carrying in a pocket for a couple days?

i have an old knife that is from what im thinking is made around the 70′s or 80′s. just a guess as i have not been able to find a date. this is what it looks like

its called a master barlow with a 4 inch blade. its not that new shinny stainless blade, its an old blade that is like a dull grey and says prov colonial USA. ive heard the blade described as a “frosty” metal

after i carry it for a few days the blade starts to have rust spots,so i have to sand the spots off with real fine sandpaper around 400+ grit. then it looks good, then a few days later they are back. should i keep some kind of oil on the blade, cause i’ve got knifes older than it and some newer than it and i never had trouble with them rusting

Absolutely use oil on it! Oil will wipe right off, rust doesn’t! I would use any good gun oil on it. Remember, a pocket is a warm, damp place and your knife needs protection from that. I recommend a product called ” Sheath ” made by ” Birchwood Casey ” or” Breakfree CLP “. Either of these will protect your metal parts! I think your knife is a carbon steel blade which will rust badly, if not protected. I live in Florida, where it’s warm and damp and I use these two products on my guns and knives with excellent results! :)
