Common Envelope Types You Can Choose From

When you want to create custom envelopes you will face the decision of choosing the envelope style. You might have thought that envelopes have one basic style, like those letter envelopes, but in fact there are five major envelope styles that you can use for your custom envelopes. Each requires a different kind of envelope printing and are of course used for different purposes as well. To help you sort all the styles out, below is a simple guide on each of them.

1. A Series Envelopes – The “A” series of envelopes are the envelopes that are commonly used for informal invitations and announcements. Unlike common letter or commercial envelopes, its defining characteristic is its flap. Instead of the “V” type flap found on common letter envelopes, it has a straight type flap that is deep, reaching the middle of the envelope. The A-series of envelopes have different indications from A-1 to A-10 with a lot of variations in dimensions. All of them though have that straight flap that identifies it as an A series.

2. Baronial Envelopes – Baronial envelopes on the other hand are the ones you usually see used for greeting cards and letter stationeries. This is a more formal type envelope that is almost square in appearance but not quite yet. It has diagonal seams with a “V” type flap with which the tip is almost located at the center. Baronial envelopes have number indicators 2 -6 as well as named types such as the “Astor”, “Gladstone” and “Lee” which indicates different sizes and ratio of dimensions. The distinguishing factor though for baronial envelope is its almost square like appearance and the V type flap.

3. Booklet Envelopes – Booklet envelopes on the other hand or envelopes that are great for general mailing. Of course this envelope type is great at mailing booklets in particular, but more or less with their significantly large sizes you can use booklet envelopes for almost any kind of mailing you need. Booklet types are characterized by a straight type or wallet type flap that is very shallow and close to the edge of the envelope. They have indicator numbers of 3-13 indicating the different sizes and dimensions of booklet envelopes.

4. Catalog Envelopes – Now, catalog envelopes are the envelopes that are used for very thick and heave weight materials like magazines, reports and of course color catalogs. Like the booklet envelopes they have a straight type or wallet type flap that is close to the edge of the envelope. The only difference in terms of the flap is that usually in catalog envelopes the flaps are located at the shorter side of the envelope rather than the longer side where most envelopes locate it. Catalog envelopes are usually far larger than other envelopes and have indications from 1-15 depending on their overall size and dimensions.

5. Commercial Envelopes – Finally, we have the commercial envelopes. Commercial envelopes are your standard letter envelopes that are used for personal letters and business correspondence. It usually has a “V” type flap that is located somewhat close to the edge of the envelope. The #10 standard envelope is part of this class of envelopes, though the indicators range from a #5 envelope to a #16 envelope depending on the size and overall dimensions.
