What protects American citizens from abuses of government power?

The emphasis is always on protecting us from foreign terrorists, protecting us from food, protecting us from dangerous objects, protecting us from our fellow citizens. Not enough emphasis on protecting us from government in my opinion.

I love this question. The answer of course, is the US constitution. It’s main purpose is to limit the power of the federal government. It very specifically sets forth the enumerated powers of each branch of government, reserving the most powers to the states and the people.

Now, that does not keep our “leaders” from trying to grab more and more power so that they can dictate every aspect of our lives. But it’s the constitution that protects us.
