WOW Death Knight Leveling Guide

Even though the are one of the more recently created characters, the Death Knights are an overpowering class. These once dead characters had been controlled by the evil Lich King; they are now on a quest to end his evil plan. The Death Knight’s power comes from the dark power given to them by the Lich King. Oncepart of his legion, they now use his own powers against him to stop the destruction of Azeroth. They are given the power to wear plated gear, and are so strong, that you must first have a character at level fifty five before you can even use the Death Knight. All types of characters can become a Death Knight.

The Death Knight is a very flexible character class, being able to wear all type of gear (although plated is the best) and use almost every type of weapon (minus ranged weapons). In addition to their overpowering melee abilities, Death Knights also have some ranged spells. Even though it is limited it can be helpful more often than not.

Unlike other characters that utilize mana or focus as their main source of power, Death Knights have what is called a Rune system. Unlike other characters, the Death Knight’s Rune system grows with every abilitiy you utilize, allowing you to continually have a source of power in battles.

Another advantage is having access to Ebony Hold when ever you want. This is the Death Knight’s (DK’s) home. When you go back to your starting area you have can forge your weapon with powerful upgrades. One of the best parts of being a Death Knight is access to these rare and powerful enchants to your weapon.

The only two specs that a DK can be is a tank and a DPS. This is because of their huge amount of armor and the overwhelming power they possess. When talking about damage, you will do almost all of your damage with spells that do damage over time. This is because of your most important aspect as a Death Knight, your diseases. These diseases can assist you in destroying one enemy, or if you want you can infect a large group of enemies. These diseases can be continually renewed until an target is gone. This is the number one strength in a Death Knight’s arsenal. This gives them the advantage against one or many opponents.

You will not find any other class of character who has something similar to the energy system a Death Knight has. You hear a lot about the rotation of the DK being so important; this is because there are 2 of each of the 3 Runes and you must use them wisely. If you have a good rotation of spells then it will feel like you DK has unlimited power.

In addition, when you utilize any of the different types of runes for the first time, you have the ability to turn that rune into a death rune. When it is needed, a death rune will count as any one of the other three rune types. The death rune is what gives the Death Knight the power to get stronger over long periods of time.

The use of your runes and your rotation will heavily depend on which talent you decide to become. You have three choices: Blood, Frost and Unholy. Blood is the universal tanking spec. With its self healing buffs and powerful armor and dodge talents, Blood spec is the only option when tanking.

When it comes to DPS you have two choices: Frost and Unholy. There is some debate over which is the highest overall damage. Frost is a spec that can support both one handed and two handed weapons, while Unholy makes your attacks quicker and is best with two handed weapons. Frost gives you more strength while Unholy gives you more speed. When push comes to shove you are better off with Unholy, its damage over long periods of time is greater, but Frost is a very close second. You would be great if you picked either one.

Leveling is a whole different beast when it comes to selecting your talent tree. Blood is the best spec for a Death Knight that is leveling. The ability to heal yourself as you do damage to targets makes it nearly impossible for you to die, which makes leveling quick and efficient. If you choose to level through dungeons and instances, Blood will help you considerably because it will give you the chance to outlast all of the enemies that you might face.

Once you have reached your max level, you may then change specs to either of the other 2, or stay in Blood. Use your portal to Ebony Hold if you want to change specs and speak with a talent trainer.

One of the biggest draws of a DK is their strong melee abilities and spells. There is no shortage of people to ask advice from, but just understand; the more people there are, the more opinions there are. Even though you have the option to become a tank or a DPS character, the strongest point of a Death Knight is their damage so DPS will be your best spec.
