United States Plans To Give Pakistan $2 Billion In Military Services Support

The cost of America’s “War on Terror” continues to skyrocket, indicates the Associated Press. The bill this time would amount to $2 billion for Pakistan military aid against al-Qaida and also the Taliban, should Congress approve. According to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the administration will ask Congress to approve the funds for use from 2012 to 2016 for U.S.-made arms, ammo and field gear.

Pakistan military aid is not for all components

The AP accounts that the Obama administration does not want to give all of the Pakistani military components the Pakistan military aid. Human rights issues are in question with some of the units. They have been torturing prisoners and having executions with trial. The Pakistani govt might not even plan to policing its border with Afghanistan. There is also a concern about previous United States of America funding getting used to buy missiles to target India which is a United States of America ally. The nation is already getting $7.5 billion to help with its recent flood which is before counting the military aid.

A conference for launching the plan was made by Clinton and Qureshi

The meeting that it had been declared at had Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi at it. This is why Secretary of State Clinton needed to be careful. The United States is uneasy with the Islamabad government’s perceived soft stance on terrorism, yet Clinton underscored “the sacrifice and service” that the people of Pakistan have made in their attempts to restore order to their nation. Qureshi doesn’t believe they’re soft on terrorism. He said, “We do not understand what greater evidence to offer (as proof to the contrary) than the blood of our individuals.”

Human rights something the United States of America wants Pakistan to work on

Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont backed the 1997 legislation that does not all Pakistani units that are expected to have human rights violations to get military aid. The AP explains the Leahy Amendment, “bars U.S. military services assistance from going to foreign armed forces suspected of committing atrocities.”The Leahy Amendment “bars U.S. military services assistance from going to foreign armed forces suspected of committing atrocities.” This is what the AP reports. There could be negations made with the Pakistan military aid although the negations will take into account the Leahy Amendment. The U.S. is encouraging all units to comply with the Leahy Amendment. This is for those units who aren’t already.
