Shri C. B. Satpathy – The Disciple of Shirdi Sai Baba

Three religious shrines of India attract millions of devotees every year. They are “Thirupathy Thirumala Devsthanam” in Andhra Pradesh, the “Vaishno Devi” Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir and the “Shirdi Sai Baba” Shrine in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. These three are the richest shrines of India.

Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi is known as a “Sadguru” (Perfect Master). He lived in Shirdi for more than 60 years and therefore, he is popularly known as the Sai Baba of Shirdi. His name and fame is spreading like wild fire and many temples across the globe are being constructed for him. “Sai Utsav” (festival) is regularly organized in Indian cities as well as in Chicago, Sydney, Johannesburg, Nairobi and other European cities. Number of Sai devotees is increasing at a fast pace.

Shri Chandra Bhanu Satpathy was an “Indian Police Service” officer and retired as the Director General of Police from Uttar Pradesh. He was attracted to Sai Baba in 1989 and he slowly became the torch-bearer of Sai movement. The two books written by him are “Shirdi Sai Baba and other Perfect Masters” and “Baba- May I Answer”. He has also written a number of devotional songs under the title “Sai Sharan Mein”. Many of his songs are available on cassettes and CDs.

Shri C. B. Satpathy is considered by Sai devotees as an ardent disciple of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba. He has been the guiding force towards construction of hundreds of Sai temples in India and abroad. Shri A. R. Nanda, a retired “Indian Administrative Service” officer in his forward to the book “Baba- May I Answer” considers Shri Satpathy as the “Ankit Santan” (chosen child) of Sai Baba. Various questions of devotees have been answered by Shri C. B. Satpathy in the book “Baba- May I Answer” with intelligence and skill. The answers show the level which Shri Satpathy has himself attained because of his unbound devotion to Sai Baba.

According to him the relationship between the “Sadguru” and the disciple is very simple. The Guru is always hidden in the disciple and when the worldly covers are removed and the mind gets purified, the real image of the Guru starts getting reflected in the disciple. The disciple and the Guru cease to remain separate entities because they start living into each other in subtle form. Man always remains in search of God. The “Sadguru” helps him in this quest by purifying his mind and soul.

Religious texts have been written thousands of years ago and different scholars interpret the texts differently. This causes confusion. Shri C. B. Satpathy has attempted to make the matters simple. While answering some of the questions he has become more scientific. One such question relates to the presence of God in living and the non-living things alike. It was also asked whether non-living things also have some “Dharma”. In this context the answer given by him has been reproduced below.

“Dharma in the real sense of the term means the existence of a whole by holding together the parts. It is not only the formal “Dharmas” like Hinduism or Christianity. Dharma is all pervasive in the universe. When the different life forms had not evolved on this earth, it was an earth consisting of material forces like water, earth, fire, air and a sky. It is through process of evolution of nature that the non-living forces created the living form and forces. Therefore even after the living, including human beings were created; the seen and unseen interaction between the living and the non-living continues. These two elements of living and non-living are so much interdependent that if the relation between the living and the non-living forces are not balanced then chaos will be created on earth…… (Page 36 from Baba- May I Answer)”

Shri Satpathy has divided the book into many sections like God, faith and devotion, agony, astrology, ego, anger, compassion, charity, peace, life and death etc. While answering some question relating to astrology Shri Satpathy is of the opinion that astrologers can at best predict the future in a limited way. “Sadgurus” like Sai Baba can help their devotees in the creation of their destiny. This was the view of “Varahmihir” also.

Thus, Shri C. B. Satpathy is a shining star in the global Sai movement. He is an ardent believer in the power of the “Sadguru”. He believes that with the walk of the “Sadguru” over the earth, the spiritual power of the planet starts getting rejuvenated. His power affects all the living and non-living things alike. The earth surrenders its burden at His feet. The suffering humanity will also benefit immensely by surrendering to “Sadguru”. Shri C. B. Satpathy is not merely a Sai devotee but has become a beacon light in guiding people to Sai faith. He has become a true disciple of Sai Baba.
