Strengths:
- The 1058′s main attraction is its cutting capacity. This trimmer can cut up to 40 sheets of paper at a time, which is great for this kind of device. The cutting capacity is based on 20 lb. bond paper, so you may even be able to cut a little bit more if your paper is really thin.
- Another wonderful thing about the 1058 is its ability to trim really large sheets of paper. This device has a 22.5-inch cutting length, so it’s perfect for oversized documents. It can even cut tabloid-sized paper easily. (Tabloid-sized sheets measure 11″ x 17″.)
- This cutter has a blade that’s made out of Solingen steel which is one of the finest metals around. While the blade isn’t self-sharpening, you can sharpen it manually. This will enable you to get a lot of use out of this trimmer.
- The 1058 comes with a safety guard that’s made from high-quality Lexan. (Lexan is a durable plastic.) The safety guard will help keep your hands away from the blade so you can avoid getting injured. The Lexan is transparent so you’ll be safe, but will still be able to see what you’re doing.
- Using this cutter is pretty easy even when you’re working with large amounts of paper. It has an adjustable backstop and there’s even fold-out supports that make working with thin sheets a snap. There are both metric and standard measurements on the base, as well as cutting guides that will help you trim your sheets down to various standard sizes (i.e. 8.5″ x 11″).
- Overall, the 1058 is well-constructed and nicely designed. It has a lot of metal parts so you can be sure that it’s durable and that you’ll get a lot of use out of it.
- Finally, this product is backed a year-long warranty that excludes wearables (i.e. the blade).
Weaknesses:
- The 1058 was designed to be a tabletop device, but it will definitely take up a lot of room no matter where you place it. This is because it measures 31.5″ (depth) x 10″ (width) x 15.5″ (height). (The base itself is 24.25″ x 14.25″.) Thus, this isn’t the best trimmer to get if you’re lacking space in your work area.
- While it’s great that the blade can be resharpened, it would be nice if it were self-sharpening instead.
MBM’s Kutrimmer series contains some of the best paper cutters available and the 1058 is definitely one of them. This is a well-constructed trimmer that’s perfect for large jobs and it’s durable enough to be used frequently. The Lexan guard makes using this trimmer safe so you can enjoy a (nearly) risk-free cutting experience. Although this device is large and lacks a self-sharpening blade, the 1058 is an excellent choice for your cutting needs.
