Best Revolver – S&W vs. Ruger GP100

Ever since it was invented, the revolver has been an American icon. Its design is simple, clean and classic, which makes it the most reliable and accurate type of gun available today. There’s not a ton that can go wrong with a revolver. They are made up of a rotating cylinder with 5-6 chambers for bullets and a barrel to shoot those bullets. Their actions are simple, and have made them the go-to gun for many satisfied owners. They were extremely popular and considered the standard side-arm in military, western, concealed carry and about every other area of life for many years. Clint Eastwood made the Smith and Wesson 29 and the .44 Mag famous in the Dirty Harry movie series. But today, what can be considered to be the Best Revolver?

We kept the categories reputation, price and construction in mind while we were judging. It was extremely close between the Smith and Wesson Revolver (medium frame models) and the Ruger GP100 Revolver. For the most part choosing one comes down to personal preference, but for this battle, we went against history and crowned the Ruger GP100 Revolver as the Best Revolver over the Smith and Wesson.

Reputation

In this category, the Smith and Wesson Revolvers easily won. You simply can’t beat the Smith and Wesson name in the world of guns. They are the biggest gun manufacturer in the US, and have been around making quality weapons for 150+ years. Ruger has developed a solid reputation in the gun world, but because of the tremendous name and popularity of Smith and Wesson in the United States, they took this category.

Price

In the area of price, the Ruger GP100 took back the lead. Ruger revolvers are significantly cheaper than their Smith and Wesson counterparts, usually by a few hundred dollars, which makes a huge difference for most gun buyers. For them it doesn’t make sense to spend hundreds of dollars more for a gun that really doesn’t perform significantly better than the $450 gun. You are mostly paying for the Smith and Wesson name, as well as the Made in America stamp, which has its own value. In my opinion they are both very similar guns, and so for the price, it would make more sense to go with the Ruger.

Construction

The last section we judged the guns on is their construction. From everything I’ve read, the Ruger revolvers are more solid constructed guns and are made with better metal than the Smith and Wesson Revolvers. I know many people will stand behind their S&W revolvers until the end, but the Ruger wins in this category.

Bottom Line

The bottom line is that the Ruger GP100 is the Best Revolver available today. It’s an amazingly durable and reliable gun, and for the price is your best option to get. I still can’t deny that the Smith and Wesson Revolver are absolutely amazing guns, but for the price and day-in, day-out use, I would go with the Ruger.
